ONE LINER OF THE DAY 7th JANUARY 2018


1.The government of India merged three Regional Rural Banks- Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank, and Sutlej Gramin Bank.The single RRB will come into effect from 1 January 2019.The sponsor banks of the RRBs are NABARD, the Government of Punjab and Punjab National Bank, SBI, and Punjab and Sind Bank.

2.Vijay Mallya became the first tycoon to be charged under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018.According to the new law, a fugitive economic offender is a person against whom an arrest warrant has been issued for his or her involvement in economic offences involving at least Rs. 100 crore or more and has left India to avoid prosecution.The new law came into effect from August 2018.

3.Vadodara will host the eighth International Marathon on 6 January 2019.The marathon will be held across four categories: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km and 5 km.Other categories include ‘divyang paralympic run’, ‘swachhata run’, ‘pledge run’ and ‘jawan run’.

4.The National Green Tribunal imposed a fine of 100 crore rupees on Meghalaya government for its failure to curb illegal coal mining in the state.The amount of the fine has to be deposited with the Central Pollution Control Board.The action comes after a high-level committee submitted an adverse report to a bench headed by NGT chairperson AK Goel.

5.Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched projects worth more than Rs 4,500 crore in Odisha on 5 January 2019.The projects are related to road highways and transport, petroleum and natural gas, railways, culture, tourism and passport services.He also inaugurated the multi-modal logistics hub in Balasore as well as a project for restoration and conservation of historical site of Haripurgarh.

6.The Women’s Science Congress was inaugurated at the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar on 6 January 2019.Women’s Science Congress is a part of the 106th Indian Science Congress.The objective of the Women’s Science Congress is to showcase the work of women scientists.

7.Farooq Sheikh and Asha Parekh will be honoured by the Bimal Roy Memorial and Film Society to commemorate the 52nd death anniversary of the renowned filmmaker.The society was instituted in memory of the late filmmaker Bimal Roy.Its aim is to reward unsung heroes of the film industry.

8.Veteran journalist Dinu Randive was conferred with the lifetime achievement award by the Mantralaya and Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh.The Sangh is an association of journalists covering Maharashtra legislature and secretariat.

9.United Bank of India and Srei Equipment Finance signed an agreement for financing the MSME and agriculture sectors.Under the pact, UBI will leverage its low-cost loans with Srei to enable the purchase of equipment and vehicles in a seamless manner.Ashok Kumar Pradhan is the United Bank of India’s MD and CEO.

10.The government of India issued an ‘Orange’ alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due Cyclonic storm ‘Pabuk’ on 6 January 2019.‘Pabuk’ is now over the Andaman sea and its neighbourhood.An ‘orange’ weather warning means people should be prepared and there is an increased likelihood of bad or extreme weather which may disrupt road and air travel and threaten life and property.
