ONE LINER OF THE DAY 30th SEPEMBER 2018.


1.Assam Government has become the first Indian state to offer a Wage Compensation Scheme for pregnant women working in the tea gardens of the state. The scheme will be launched by Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal in Guwahati. The announcement was made by the state’s Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.Under the scheme, an amount of Rs 12,000 will be given to the pregnant women so that they can take care of themselves and the unborn baby.Jagdish Mukhi is the Present Governor of Assam.Dispur is the Capital city of Assam. 

2.In pursuance of its objective of ensuring that Legislation is in sync with the needs of strong economic fundamentals, the Government has constituted a Competition Law Review Committee to review the Competition Act.The Committee will be headed by Injeti Srinivas, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The Competition Act was passed in the year 2002 and the Competition Commission of India was set up in pursuance of the same. 

3.The Government constituted a seven-member ministerial panel headed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi to examine modalities for revenue mobilisation in case of natural calamities and disasters.The panel would look into five issues flagged by the Council, including whether the new tax should be levied only in the state concerned or should it be an all-India levy, and that should it be on specified luxury or sin goods only. 

4.Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) launched a Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System (FFEWS) for Kolkata City. It is also India’s first comprehensive city-level FFEWS. It will reduce economic loss and impacts on livelihood and improve flood awareness and safety at the community level.The Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded the design and implementation of the FFEWS through a $1 million technical assistance to KMC from its Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund under the Urban Financing Partnership Facility.

  • 5.30 September celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The theme for International Translation Day 2018 is “Translation: promoting cultural heritage in changing times”.

6.Ministry of AYUSH has set up an AYUSH Information Cell at the premises of the Indian Embassy in Romania to disseminate authentic information about AYUSH system of medicine and encourage Ayurveda practice in Romania.The AYUSH Information Cell, Romania will help to organise lectures, consultation, conduct seminars, training courses and facilitate associations of AYUSH stakeholders for networking conducting meetings, develop awareness of AYUSH system among public in Romania.Romania Capital: Bucharest, Currency: Romanian leu. 


7.Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Skill Development and Entrepreneurship launched an innovative initiative titled SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation).This initiative would benefit both vehicle-users as well as farmers and entrepreneurs. It has been launched with PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to set up Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) production plants and make available CBG in the market for use in automotive fuels. 

8.The three day Kalahandi Dialogue, a global conclave on development has been launched by Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik. Using the platform the Chief Minister launched several projects for the district of Kalahandi.Sujeet Kumar was the Chairperson of Kalahandi Dialogue. The dialogue aimed to involve youth in development activities. New PG programmes launched at OUAT and three centres of excellence were launched. 

9.According to Association of Mutual Funds of India’s (AMFI) statistics, Maharashtra tops the chart for state with the maximum penetration and Assets Under Management (AUM). Also, as per August, average assets under management (AUM) of mutual funds rose to an all-time high of Rs 25.2 lakh crore across the country.Association of Mutual Funds of Indian (AMFI) Headquarters in Mumbai.A. 10.The MoU between the Portuguese Environment Ministry and Goa Public Works Department (PWD) was signed. It will help Goa manage its water resources better.The signing of the two-year long arrangement is a significant move to work in tandem to develop common initiatives for water supply and wastewater management in the state. The projects would include:1. Opa water supply project in north Goa,2. Sewage water treatment plant in Valpoi and3. Manganese-removal efforts in Selaulim Reservoir.

1.In order to fight the growing problem of counterfeit drugs in India, NITI Aayog and Oracle signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to pilot a real drug supply-chain using blockchain distributed ledger and Internet of Things (IoT) software. Apollo Hospitals and Strides Pharma Sciences will partner in this effort.

2. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM – U), has partnered with Google to launch the Loo Review campaign to encourage all local guides in India to rate and review public toilets on Google Maps. Open Defecation Free States/UTs till date-24. Swachh Bharat Mission launched on - 2nd October 2014. 

3. In Madhya Pradesh, the first corn festival of the country is being held in Chhindwara. The festival is one of a kind international event.Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest corn producing states in India, with Chhindwara being the highest corn producing district.Madhya Pradesh CM: Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Governor: Anandiben Patel. 

4.Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Conference on Academic Leadership on Education for Resurgence in New Delhi in which the Vice-Chancellors, Directors from more than 350 universities participated.The theme of the conference is to deliberate on challenges facing the Indian education system and to work out a plan for a paradigm shift both in terms of achieving academic outcomes and also in the regulation of education. The conference was also addressed HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.

5.Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launched the ‘Rail Heritage Digitisation Project’ of Indian Railways in collaboration with Google Arts and Culture Association.The first-of-its-kind project aims to showcase India’s rail heritage to the national and international audience in an online story-telling platform. It is the largest cultural heritage digitisation project not only in India but possibly in the entire Asia Pacific Region. 

6.World Heart Day takes place on 29th September every year and is the World Heart Federation‘s and the world’s biggest platform for raising awareness about cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke.

7.Ambassador of India to Myanmar, Vikram Misri has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to China, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.China Capital: Beijing, Currency: Renminbi, President: Xi Jinping.

8.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) barred Bandhan Bank from opening new branches and also ordered freezing of the bank's CEO salary over failure to stick to shareholding rules.The Bank was not able to bring down the shareholding of Non-Operative Financial Holding Company (NOFHC) to 40% as required under the licensing condition, general permission to open new branches stands withdrawn. 

9.As per the bank's website, it has 937 branches in parts of the country. The Bandhan, a MFI, was given conditional approval by the RBI for setting up universal bank in April 2014.The bank operational in 2015. Headquartered in Kolkata, Bandhan, which started as a micro-finance company in 2001, received banking licence by Reserve Bank of India in 2014. 

10.India has defeated Bangladesh to win the Unimoni Asia Cup Title 2018. This was the second successive Asia Cup final where India took on Bangladesh. In 2016, India had decimated Bangladesh in the final (of the Asia Cup T20)Shikhar Dhawan was declared as the Player Of The Series.

1.A committee of governors set up by President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report on doubling farm income on 26 October 2018.It recommended developing climate-resilient and input-efficient crop varieties.It has made 21 major recommendations for doubling the income of farmers.Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik is the head of the panel.

2.The government of India appointed Indian Revenue Service officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra as Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED).He has been given additional charge of the post of Director for a period of three months.The ED enforces two major laws in the country to check black money: The criminal Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

3.India Mobile Congress(IMC) 2018 concluded on 27 October 2018.The theme for IMC 2018 was ‘New Digital Horizons – Connect. Create. Innovate’.Delegations from 20 countries participated in the event, which saw more than 300 companies showcasing their latest and best technologies, products, services, and applications.

4.Michael D Higgins has been re-elected as Irish President after receiving 56% of the country’s electoral vote.Businessman Peter Casey came second with 23.1% votes.The President is Ireland’s ‘first citizen’, but has limited power – the role is mainly symbolic and he or she cannot get involved in daily politics.

5.Former army captain Jair Bolsonaro was elected President of Brazil on 28 October 2018.He defeated leftist opponent Fernando Haddad.

6.Indian table tennis player Ayhika Mukherjee won the silver medal in the under-21 women’s singles category of the ITTF Challenge Belgium Open.She lost to Korea’s Youjin Kim in the final.

7.India’s first gallery on robotic dinosaurs was inaugurated on 27th October 2018 at the Pushpa Gujral Science City in Kapurthala, Punjab.The new gallery will display the story of birth and evolution of dinosaurs.A total of 7 moving dinosaurs, made from steel and silica gel with durable motors, have been added to the exhibition.

8.The Indian government donated about US$ 300,000 for the ‘Pipeline to Peacekeeping Command Programme’.The programme will, over a period of three years, help develop the capacity of future commanders and managers to lead by example and raise awareness of UN standards.India is one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions.

9.State Bank of India (SBI) formed a Joint Venture (JV) with Hitachi Payment Services Pvt Ltd to create a digital payment networkHitachi Payments will invest 26% in SBI Payment Services Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SBI.The JV agreement is subject to requisite regulatory approvals.The JV will provide various payment options to customers and merchants.

10.The 1st edition of ‘North East Olympic Games’ concluded in Imphal on 28th October 2018.Manipur secured the top spot in the medal tally followed by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.Athletes from the eight northeastern states competed in 12 different disciplines at the sporting event that began on October 24.The 2nd edition of North East Olympic Games will be held in Arunachal Pradesh in 2019.

1.The Union Minister for Tourism (IC), Mr. K.J. Alphons launched the ‘Incredible India Mobile App’ and the “Incredible India Tourist Facilitators Certification” programme.The Minister announced that India will be the host country for official World Tourism Day celebrations for the UNWTO, in 2019. The theme for the World Tourism Day 2018 being “Tourism & Digital Transformation”. 

2.CEO NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant and United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Yuri Afanasiev, signed the Government of India-United Nations Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF) for 2018-2022, at a special signing ceremony. The NITI Aayog is the national counterpart for the UN in India for the operationalization of the UNSDF.

The government of India-United Nations Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) 2018-2022 outlines the work of UN agencies in India, to support the achievement of key development outcomes that have been identified in consultation with the government and are aligned to the national priorities.

3.The government has set up an eight-member Lokpal Search Committee under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash, former SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya and Justice Sukha Ram Singh Yadav among others will be members of the panel.An official order issued by Ministry of Personnel stated that the panel will recommend the names for the Chairperson and Members of the Lokpal to the Lokpal Selection Committee. 

4.J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare addressed at the ‘High Level Meeting on Tuberculosis at 73rd session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at New York’.He stated that India has shown personal commitment to tackle TB head-on as India plans to eliminate TB by 2025, five years ahead of the SDG target of 2030, by launching the TB Free India Campaign. 

5.World Rabies Day is celebrated on 28 September. It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease.28 September also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine. 

6.The 8th Asian Yoga Sports Championship organised by Asian Yoga Federation has begun in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally inaugurate the event. 

7.Tourism Minister K J Alphons presented National Tourism Awards 2016-17 in New Delhi. Andhra Pradesh bagged the first prize in state category for comprehensive development of tourism.The state got the prize for promoting Andhra Pradesh Tourism as a global tourism brand. Kerala bagged the second prize for comprehensive development of tourism.

9.The Reserve Bank of India allowed banks to dip further into statutory cash reserves in a bid to ease a liquidity squeeze afflicting the nation’s money markets. The move by the central bank follows concerns over tight liquidity conditions and banks’ unwillingness to lend to NBFCs.As per the RBI, banks could 'carve out' up to 15% of holdings under the statutory liquidity reserves to meet their liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) requirements as compared to 13% now. 

10.India ranks 158th in the world for its investments in education and health care, according to the first-ever scientific study ranking countries for their levels of human capital. The nation is placed behind Sudan (ranked 157th) and ahead of Namibia (ranked 159th) in the list.The study, published in journal The Lancet, says that India is ranked at 158 out of 195 countries

      1.The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley, launched the Financial Inclusion Index.The index will have three measurement dimensions: (1) Access to financial services (2) Usage of financial services and (3) Quality.The various components of the index will also help to measure financial services for use of internal policy making.

      2.Mukesh Ambani has topped the ‘Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018’ for the seventh consecutive year.Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018 is a compilation of the individuals in India having a net worth of ₹1,000 crore or more.The list was compiled on the basis of the net worth of living Indians as on July 31, 2018.Mukesh Ambani is followed by S.P. Hinduja and L.N. Mittal.

      3.World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September to raise awareness about the role of tourism in the international community.WTD 2018 theme: “Tourism and the Digital Transformation”.The host country for WTD 2018 is Hungary.

      4.The Union Cabinet has approved  the MoU between India and Uzbekistan on 26th September, 2018.The MoU will help in mutual cooperation in regulation of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and in combating drug trafficking.It is an effective framework to deal with all issues requiring mutual assistance and cooperation in the areas identified.

      5.The Cabinet has approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NITI Aayog, and Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation (MEDRF).The MoU is in the field of social, economic, industrial and regional development programs.It provides a framework and enabling environment to understand each other’s strengths, market, technologies, policies, etc.

      6.Union Cabinet approved Central Assistance of Rs. 620.42 Crore and Rs. 205.758 Crore for implementation of relining of Rajasthan Feeder Canal and Sirhind Feeder Canal respectively.Implementation of these twin projects would help in addressing the problem of water-logging in South-West Punjab.Funding to the Rajasthan Feeder and Sirhind feeder shall be made through NABARD.

      7.The Union Cabinet has approved the National Digital Communications Policy-2018 (NDCP-2018) and re-designation of the Telecom Commission as the “Digital Communications Commission”.The policy aims to facilitate India’s effective participation in the global digital economy.The policy also aims to ensure digital sovereignty and the objectives are to be achieved by 2022.

      8.Finance Ministry has launched Mobile Application ‘Jan Dhan Darshak’ as a Part of Financial Inclusion.This App will provide guidance to the common people in locating a financial service touch point at a given location in the country.Department of Financial Services (DFS) and National Informatics Centre  (NIC) have jointly developed the app Jan Dhan Darshak.

      9.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded the prestigious United Nations Champions of the Earth Award.Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have been awarded in the Policy Leadership category, for their efforts regarding their International Solar Alliance.The Champions of the Earth prize is awarded to leaders whose actions have had a positive impact on the environment.

      10.The Supreme Court on 26 September 2018 declared the government’s Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid.The Supreme Court, however, struck down some of its provisions including its linking with bank accounts, mobile phones and school admissions.The Supreme Court held that Aadhaar would remain mandatory for the filing of IT returns and allotment of Permanent Account Number (PAN).

      1.The 2nd Global Renewable Energy Investment Meeting and Expo, (REINVEST- 2018) will be held from 2-5 Oct 2018 in New Delhi.RE-INVEST is a global platform to explore strategies for development and deployment of renewables.The 2nd RE-INVEST will include a 3-day conference on renewables, clean tech and future energy choices, an expo of renewables-related manufacturers.

      2.The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will host 2nd Ministerial Meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association from 2-4 October 2018 in Delhi NCR.The event will be held in parallel with the 1st General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the 2nd Global RE-INVEST Meet & Expo. IORA is a dynamic organisation of 21 Member States and 7 Dialogue Partners.

      3.The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley launched a web portal as a transformative initiative in MSME credit space.The web portal www.psbloansin59minutes.com will enable in principle approval for MSME loans up to Rs. 1 crore within 59 minutes from SIDBI and 5 PSBs.The majority stake of is with SIDBI & 5 PSBs- SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Vijaya and Indian Bank.

      4.Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Shri Arun Goel inaugurated the exhibition “India – Uzbekistan: Dialogue of Cultures” in New Delhi.The Exhibition is dedicated to the visit of Uzbekistan President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev to India in October.This exhibition showcases original artifacts which include coins from the royal mints of Kushans including coins depicting portraits of Kanishka etc.

      5.The Indian Armed Forces will observe ‘Parakram Parv’ from September 28 – 30 to mark the second anniversary of the surgical strikes across the Line of Control.Stories of the recipients of the highest gallantry award, the Param Veer Chakra will also be highlighted during the Parv.

      6.The RBI has shortlisted 5-IT firms for implementation of a Centralised Information and Management System for seamless data collection and validations.The 5 firms are- Capgemini Technology Services India, IBM India, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro Infotech and Tata Consultancy Services.The CIMS also include Centralised Analytics Platform to facilitate the creation of RBI Data Sciences Lab.

      7.The Haryana govt approved financial assistance to women and girl acid attack victims scheme.Under this scheme, the survivors of the crime after 2 May 2011 will be eligible for the monthly pension.Either the victim herself or her legal guardian can apply to the district social welfare officer for relief.The financial assistance will be given on the basis of the percentage of disability.

      8.Asian Development Bank will provide a $500 million loan to build climate resilient infrastructure in several cities of Tamil Nadu.Multi-tranche Financing Facility will develop climate-resilient water supply, sewerage, and drainage infrastructure in at least 10 cities.ADB said this funding will be in three tranches between Sept 2019 and March 2022.

      1.Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has now become second largest metro rail network in India.It is also the world’s largest metro project under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model.The Hyderabad metro now has an operational network of 45 km.Delhi Metro Rail with an operational network of over 350kms is the largest metro rail network in India.

      2.India will organise ‘Gandhi March’ from the iconic Peace Palace at the Hague in the Netherlands.‘Gandhi March’ will see the participation of people of all nations and around 20 ambassadors from different countries.Also, special commemorative stamps will be issued by the Indian postal department at the Peace Palace complex.October 2 is also marked as International Day of Non-Violence.

      3.Andhra Pradesh has topped among States in terms of “Ease of Living Index” rankings launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.The state is followed by Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.Ease of Living Index is a transformative initiative to help the cities assess their liveability vis-à-vis national and global benchmarks.

      4.Luka Modric won FIFA’s best male player award for 2018.Brazil and Orlando Pride forward Marta won the best female player award.Mohamed Salah’s curling, left-footed strike in an October 12, 2017 match against Everton won the Puskas Award for the best goal.Peru’s supporters won the Fifa Fan Award.

      5.The 4th edition of India International Science Festival will be inaugurated by President of India in Lucknow on October 6, 2018.Science & Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that IISF 2018 is a tribute to former PM Late Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee.IISF is the biggest platform to bring together students, researchers to celebrate India’s achievements in science and technology. 

      6.The UAE will host the Interfaith Alliance Forum in Abu Dhabi on 19th and 20th Nov 2018.The forum aims to address and discuss social challenges and to strengthen efforts by religious leaders for protection of the young individuals from extortion and crime via the internet.The alliance also highlight the importance of unifying views among religions to ensure the protection of children.

      7.25th September is observed as Antyodaya Diwas every year to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.During the Antyodaya Diwas each Swachhagrahi will be asked to create a team of his/her own Swachhagrahis.Each of these team will work on Open Defecation Free activities in their villages.22 States and UTs have been declared Open Defecation Free so far.

      8.Supreme Court constituted a 3 member committee to look into the aspect of jail reforms across the country and suggest measures to deal with them.The committee is headed by the former judge Justice Amitava Roy.The committee will also look into the various issues concerning women prisoners.

      9.Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the rehabilitation and up-gradation of Jowai-Ratacherra (Meghalaya Assam border) section of the National Highway- 06 at Shillong.The 102 km road is very important for the development of industries as it passes through cement and coal belts of the Meghalaya.NH 6, is a national highway running from Jorabat in Meghalaya to Selling in Mizoram.

      10.India and China will sign an internal security cooperation agreement during the visit of China’s Minister of Public Security in October 2018.The proposed pact is expected to cover areas of intelligence sharing, exchange programme, sharing of best practices, cooperation in disaster mitigation.This will be the first such agreement between India and China which look after internal security.

      1.Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away in Mumbai. She was 64.  Lajmi, a director, producer and screenwriter, was known for working on real subjects. She was known for her women-oriented films like "Rudaali", "Daman", "Darmiyaan". 

      2.Former BCCI president Biswanath Dutt, best known in the Indian cricket fraternity as Jagmohan Dalmiya’s mentor, passed away aged 92 after suffering from acute lung infection. 

      3.Nepal is likely to be the first country in the world to double its tiger population.Nepal announced that there are now an estimated 235 wild tigers in the country, nearly doubling the baseline of around 121 tigers in 2009.Nepal conducted its national tiger survey between November 2017 and April 2018 in the transboundary Terai Arc Landscape (TAL).

      4.International Day of Sign Languages” was celebrated by Indian Sign Language Research and Training  Centre (ISLRTC), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 23 September 2018.International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year.The theme of International Day of Sign Languages is “With Sign Language, Everyone is Included !”.

      5.The Mysuru city police have launched ‘Mysuraksha‘ app to ensure the safety and security of auto and cab passengers.The passengers can scan the QR (Quick Response) code printed on autos and cabs that will have the details of the vehicle and the driver.If the passengers encounter any trouble, they can transmit the details to the police control room just by pressing the SOS button.

      6.World Bank (WB), the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon launched a “Famine Action Mechanism” (FAM).FAM is an algorithm that will use analytics to identify areas that are likely to experience extreme food shortages.FAM will promote investments that tackle the causes of famine at the first warning signs.

      7.Assamese movie ‘Village Rockstars’ has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars 2019.The film is directed by Rima Das.The film which had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and India premiere at the Mumbai Film Festival 2018.

      8.First women-only foreign minister conference was held in Montreal, Canada on 22 September 2018.It is aimed at highlighting women’s key role in politics and decision-making processes.The meeting was co-chaired by Canada’s top diplomat, Chrystia Freeland, and the foreign affairs representative of the European UnionFederica Mogherini.

      9.The World Bank, in its preliminary report, has estimated that an amount of Rs 25,050 crore is necessary for rebuilding the state.The report was prepared after the visits of World Bank and Asian Development Bank teams to several flood-hit areas of Kerala.The final report would be submitted on October 1, 2018, after incorporating the changes suggested by the State government.
