1.The North Central Railway (NCR) launched a mobile application to help people navigate through Prayagraj city during Kumbh Mela starting from 15 January 2019.The name of the app is ‘Rail Kumbh Seva Mobile App’.It will also provide information regarding all the ‘Mela special’ trains that will be run during the period.The app will provide a link to the user to buy the train tickets.
2.Union Minister for Women & Child Development, Maneka Gandhi conferred National Awards to 97 Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) on 7 January 2019.The awards were given for their Exceptional Achievements for the year 2017-18The award is given to motivate the AWWs and recognise their exemplary service in the field of child development and related areas under the Integrated Child Development Scheme.
3.The government has notified a High-Level Committee for implementation of Clause six of the Assam Accord on 6 January 2019.The committee is headed by former IAS officer M.P. Bezbaruah.It will assess the appropriate level of reservation of seats in the Assam Assembly and local bodies for the Assamese people, besides providing employment opportunities.
4.Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg arrived in New Delhi on a three-day state visit to India on 7 January 2019.She will participate in the Indo-Norwegian Business Conference.Norway is a leading ocean country, and a major exporter of seafood, oil, and gas.Norway’s capital is Oslo and its currency is Norwegian Krone.
5.Lady head constable, Rani of 5th Indian Reserve Battalion of Himachal Pradesh Police won a Gold medal in the Senior National Women’s Judo Championship on 5 January 2019.The championship was held in Visakhapatnam.
6.In Gujarat, the nine-day long international kite festival kicked off at Sabarmati River Front in Ahmedabad on 6 January 2019.The festival is a part of the celebrations for Makar Sankranti (also called Uttarayan).More than 150 kite fliers from 45 countries are participating in this edition of the festival.About 500 kite fliers 13 different states of the country are also taking part.
7.The Ministry of Human Resource Development has introduced a 70-point grading index to assess the quality of school education offered by states.A state performance grading will be done wherein the states will be marked out of 1,000 on 70 parameters.This will give the correct picture of where every state stands.
8.Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced interest-free loans of up to Rs. 3 lakh for Women Self-Help Groups (WSHGs) in the state.There are around 6 lakh WSHGs in Odisha.The initiative will benefit about 70 lakh women.He also distributed financial assistance of Rs. 3,000 each to six lakh WSHGs as part of the state government’s efforts to digitally empower women.
9.Sheikh Hasina took oath as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on 7 January 2019.President Mohammad Abdul Hamid administered the oath of office to her.Sheikh Hasina became Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for the fourth time.She is the President of Awami League.
10.The Union Cabinet approved a 10% reservation for ‘economically backward’ upper castes in government jobs.The reservation will be applicable for those belonging to the upper castes and earning less than Rs 8 lakh per year.A bill to amend Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution will be moved in the Parliament to this effect.
