1.According to the World Bank’s Migration and Development Brief, India will retain its position as the world’s top recipient of remittances in 2018.India received US$80 billion as remittances from its diaspora.India is followed by China (US$67 billion), Mexico and the Philippines (US$34 billion each) and Egypt (US$26 billion).
2.SWIFT India appointed ex-SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as the new chairman of its board on 10 December 2018.SWIFT India is a joint venture of top Indian public and private sector banks and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication).SWIFT India was created to deliver high quality domestic financial messaging services to the Indian financial community.
3.DMK MP Kanimozhi has been selected for the ‘Best Woman Parliamentarian Award’ (Rajya Sabha) set up by Lokmat newspaper for 2018.A jury of eminent personalities headed by Murali Manohar Joshi selected her for the award.The award will be presented to her by Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu on 13 December 2018.
4.Reserve Bank of India’s Governor Urjit Patel resigned on 10 December 2018, citing personal reasons.He was appointed as the RBI Governor in September 2016.Urjit Patel is the fifth RBI governor in independent India to have resigned from his post before his term was over.N.S. Vishwanathan, seniormost among the four Deputy Governors, has been given charge of Governor of RBI.
5.Economist Surjit Bhalla has resigned as a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) effective 1 December 2018.EAC-PM is headed by NITI Aayog Member Bibek Debroy.EAC-PM is a non-constitutional, non-permanent and independent body constituted to give economic advice to the Government of India, specifically to the Prime Minister.
6.‘India Day’ was inaugurated in New Delhi on 10 December 2018.It is the official side event organised jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the development partners ahead of ‘Partners’ Forum 2018’.The aim of the event is to highlight the government’s Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) programme.
7.International Mountain Day (IMD) is observed every year on 11 December.The aim of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of mountains.The theme for 2018 is ‘#MountainsMatter’.Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is the coordinating agency for celebrating International Mountain Day and is mandated to lead observance of it at the global level.
8.The United Nations adopted the ‘Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration’ in Morocco on 10 December 2018.It is the non-binding global pact.The pact is aimed at coordinating action on migration around the world.The global pact lays out 23 objectives to open up legal migration and discourage illegal border crossings.
9.Israel became a full member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on 10 December 2018.Membership of the FATF will present Israel as a safe and attractive place for investments.The FATF is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1989 to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.The headquarters of FATF is in Paris, France.President of FATF is Marshall Billingslea.
10.The ‘Climate Change Performance Index’ (CCPI) 2019 was published by international NGO Germanwatch and the New Climate Institute along with the Climate Action Network (CAN) on 11 December 2018.India was ranked 11th in the Climate Change Performance Index, up from 14th in 2017.Sweden leads this ranking (Rank 4), followed by Morocco and Lithuania.
