1.India and the US held their third maritime security dialogue in Goa from 30th April to 1st May.The two sides discussed developments in the maritime domain in the Indo-Pacific Region and exchanged views on ways to further strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation.
2.World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993.Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the ‘Declaration of Windhoek’ is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.It is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom.The theme for 2018 is “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”.
3.Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh launched ‘Go to Village’ mission throughout the state of Manipur.The mission was launched on May 2 in 60 villages of all the 60 Assembly constituencies.The mission is aimed at identifying the eligible and deserving beneficiaries in every corner of the state and delivering government services at their doorstep.
4.India has joined the U.S. and China as one of the world’s five biggest military spenders, reflecting geopolitical tensions as well as the country’s reliance on imported weapons and sprawling personnel costs.India’s defense spending rose by 5.5 percent to $63.9 billion in 2017 and has now passed France, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a reportAccording to the arms watchdog, the five top military spenders in 2017 were the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India.
5.The government has doubled the investment limit to Rs 15 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandan Yojana (PMVVY) pension scheme and extended the subscription period by two years till March 31, 2020.PMVVY is for senior citizens and was available from 4th May 2017 to 3rd May 2018.The scheme provides an assured pension based on a guaranteed rate of return of 8% per annum for ten years.
6. Radhakrishnan Nair has been appointed to ICICI Bank’s board as an Additional (Independent) Director.His appointment will be for a period of five years and is subject to shareholders’ approval.
7.Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved continuation of Umbrella Scheme Green Revolution – Krishonnati Yojana in the Agriculture Sector beyond 12th Five Year Plan to 2019-20.Umbrella scheme comprises of 11 Schemes.The schemes aim to develop the agriculture & allied sector in a holistic & scientific manner to increase the income of farmers by enhancing production & productivity.
8.Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana beyond the 12th Five Year Plan to 2019-20 with a financial outlay of Rs 14,832 cr.PMSSY aims at correcting the imbalances in the availability of affordable tertiary health care facilities in different parts of the country.Under this scheme, new AIIMS are established & govt medical colleges are upgraded.
9.Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer has been appointed as Australian cricket team's head coach for all three formats. Langer replaces Darren Lehmann, who had stepped down after Australia's tour of South Africa amid the ball-tampering controversy.
10.IT firm Cognizant has acquired privately-held Belgium based Hedera Consulting, a move that will strengthen the former’s consulting and digital transformation capabilities for clients in Belgium and the Netherlands.
