1. FAO
celebrates World Food Day each year
on 16 October to commemorate the
founding of the Organization in 1945. The Theme
for World Food Day 2017 is "Change the future of migration. Invest in
food security and rural development". World Food Day is a chance to show
our commitment to Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG) 2 – to achieve Zero
Hunger by 2030. It’s also a day for us to celebrate the progress we have
already made towards reaching #ZeroHunger. The
Headquarters of FAO is in Rome, Italy.
2. Within a week of being set up, the group of ministers (GoM) on making the GST composition
scheme more attractive held its first meeting in New Delhi. The 5-member GoM, led by Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has also been tasked to revisit Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates for
restaurants.

Rajiv Kumar, the economic slowdown that began in 2013-14 has bottomed out

commissioned an indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS
Kiltan into the Indian Navy at the Naval

7. The South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu has become host to the world’s
first government to accept bitcoin in exchange for citizenship. Vanuatu’s
citizenship program costs $200,000
USD, meaning that at current prices the residency program costs less than 41.5

8. Actor Varun Dhawan will get a wax statue at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, making him

9. Union Bank of India has launched an Android
app, Union Sahyog, as part of its drive to digitise customer-facing banking
services. The Union Sahyog app is
bilingual — offering both English
and Hindi language — and packs in all mobile-based banking applications,
missed call/SMS-based services, Internet banking login and self-user creation,
deposit and loan product information, online account opening, online loan

has announced the launch of IBM

Ayurveda Day is celebrated on 17 October in New Delhi by
the Ministry of AYUSH. PM Modi was the Chief Guest and had also inaugurated
the country's

16. Mahindra & Mahindra
has launched a program, Prerna, to empower women working in the agriculture
sector by promoting efficient and ergonomic farm tools and equipment. The
project will be initially launched in the state
of Odisha, with the intention to positively impact the lives of over 1,500
families across 30-plus villages. The first project under Prerna is a collaboration between Mahindra & Mahindra, the Central Institution for Women in
Agriculture (CIWA), a department
of the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR).
17. Private sector Yes Bank has committed Rs 156 crore to fund first
Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to be constructed at Varanasi under Hybrid Annuity-PPP Model.
18. Moody’s Investors Service has affirmed ratings on domestic as
well as foreign currency bond programs of the country’s largest lender SBI.

19. The National Investment
and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) of India has signed an
investment agreement worth $1 billion with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). The
government has set up NIIF with the aim to attract investments from both
domestic and international sources for infrastructure development in
commercially viable projects.

Development Institute (FDDI) has been declared an ‘Institute of National
Importance’ under Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government
of India. The FDDI bill was passed by the Parliament in July 2017. FDDI was established in 1986. The Headquarters
of FDDI is located in Noida, Uttar
Pradesh.

87. Mr. Khan had represented India in 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He was the first
swimmer to represent India in Olympics.
25. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the ambitious 'Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojna' for
the farmers of the state. Madhya Pradesh is the first state to lend money to farmers at zero percent interest. The government has approved a web of irrigation projects
across the Sagar District which will
cover 96-hectare fields

Development is undertaking an online campaign #IamThatWoman. Through
the campaign, the Ministry seeks to

28. India has signed a Memorandum of Co-operation (MoC) with
Japan to send youngsters there as technical interns for on-the-job
training for a period of three to five years. The MoC on Technical
Intern Training Programme was signed by Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Japanese
Minister of Health, Labour, and Welfare with Katsunobu Kato in Tokyo. India is the third country with which
Japan has signed the MoC.
29. Roy Dotrice, a veteran British actor, died in London. He was 94. Dotrice
was known for his role as Leopold Mozart in the Oscar-winning film Amadeus and
his many theater and TV roles.
30. At its 41st Session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20th October 2010 as World
Statistics Day.

first-ever Tri-Services Joint Exercise between Indian and Russian Armed Forces,
INDRA-2017 began near Vladivostok in
Russia. Two indigenously built Indian Naval ships INS Satpura and INS Kadmatt
reached Vladivostok Port and were given a traditional ceremonial welcome.

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
has inaugurated the first phase of Piped Natural Gas supply system in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. In the first
phase, 255 houses in Nalco Nagar in
Chandrasekharpur of Bhubaneswar
were supplied with environment-friendly PNG. As part of the City Gas
Distribution project, around 25 thousand households in twin-city Bhubaneswar and Cuttack would get PNG
connection by end of next year.
33. The RBI has issued guidelines to banks will provide funds to women self-help groups, SHGs, in rural
areas at 7 percent under the Deendayal
Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural
Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) in the current fiscal (2017-18). The central bank has revised guidelines on interest subvention scheme
under DAY-NRLM, as received from the
Ministry of Rural Development for
implementation by 21 public sector banks
and 19 private banks.

Minister of Maharashtra Devendra
Fadnavis has released a sum of Rs 4,000
crore under the first phase of the over Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme. In the first phase, will
cover more than 8 lakh farmers, Fadnavis stated as he listed initiatives taken
by his government towards increasing investment in the agriculture sector.
35. The Income Tax Department has launched an ‘online chat’ service for taxpayers so
that they can seek answers to their basic queries and doubts relating to direct

37. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's
parliamentary constituency Varanasi
will soon get two sewage treatment
plants as part of the government's bid to curb Ganga water pollution. The sewage
treatment plants, having a total 260
million litres daily capacity, will be commissioned at Varanasi's Dinapur and Goitha before March next year. The
government had recently awarded the contract for constructing 50 MLD (million litres daily) capacity STP at Ramana in Varanasi.
38. The Centre has given green clearance for a greenfield airport project at Hirasar,
about 28 km from Rajkot in Gujarat, at a cost of over Rs. 1,400
crores.
39. A five-member committee, headed by Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash,
has been formed to select the candidate for the post of editor-in-chief of Rajya Sabha TV (RSTV). Rajya Sabha TV
is owned and operated by the Upper House of Parliament and the vice-president

40. With 2.51 million deaths in
2015, India has been ranked No. 1
in pollution-related deaths, according to a report by The Lancet Commission on pollution and health. China recorded the second
highest number of such deaths (1.8 million). India accounted for about 28 percent of an estimated nine million
pollution linked deaths worldwide in 2015.

extension, Solicitor-General of India
Ranjit Kumar, the second highest ranking law officer of the government, resigned with immediate effect.
42. The Reserve Bank of India has clarified
that linking of Aadhaar to the bank
account is mandatory under the Prevention
of Money-Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Second Amendment Rules, 2017
published in the Official Gazette on 01st
June 2017. The clarification comes after a section of the media reported
while quoting a reply to a Right to
Information Act application that linking of bank accounts with Aadhaar is not mandatory.
43. Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002
is an Act to prevent money-laundering and to provide for confiscation of
property derived from money-laundering. PMLA
and the Rules notified there under came into force with effect from 01st July 2005.
44. Kerala
government has given green signal to a proposal of the state Startup
Mission (KSUM) to accord sabbatical
leave to the faculty members of all colleges who intend to establish startups.
An expert panel, headed by KSUM CEO Saji Gopinath, will select 10 faculty members on a pilot basis for
the implementation of the project.

Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of ambitious Ghogha-Dahej Roll-on Roll-off ferry
service at Ghogha in Bhavnagar district
in Gujarat.
46. The
Government has made it mandatory for banks and financial institutions to check
the original identification documents of individuals dealing in cash above the
prescribed threshold, to weed out the use of forged or fake copies. The Department of Revenue in the Finance
Ministry has issued a gazette notification making an amendment to the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance
of Records) Rules.
