ONE LINER OF THE DAY 4th FEB 2020


1.Indian Banks' Association (IBA), formed on 26 September 1946 as a representative body of management of banking in India operating in India - an association of Indian banks and financial institutions based in Mumbai.With an initial membership representing 22 banks in India in 1946, IBA currently represents 237 banking companies operating in India. IBA was formed for development, coordination and strengthening of Indian banking, and assist the member banks in various ways including implementation of new systems and adoption of standards among the members.

2.Sam Mendes' ‘1917’ ruled the 73rd edition of Baftas with 7 wins, including best film, best British film & best director. Joaquin Phoenix & Renee Zellweger won the best actor & actress awards respectively. Micheal Ward was named the Bafta rising star.BAFTA-British Academy of Film & Television Arts.

3.One of the former communications ministers of Iraq, Mohammed Allawi is appointed the PM of Iraq by the President Barham Salih. Despite ex-PM Adel Abdul Mahdi formally resigned, he had agreed to continue in a caretaker capacity until a successor was chosen.Iraq is among the 5 most corrupt countries in the Middle East.

4.India & Maldives signed 5 MoUs for establishing the Addu Tourism zone in 5 islands of Addu atoll at a cost of USD 2.49 mn. MOUs were signed between the High Commissioner of India Sunjay Sudhir, Foreign Affairs Minister Abdulla Shahid & Addu City Council.6th MoU is signed to set up a bottled water plant in Hoarafushi.

5.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh inaugurated the month long Ekushey Book fair in Dhaka. Ekushey fair is the biggest and longest book fair of Bangladesh. It is organised every year in February commemorating the martyrs of the language movement.Fair is arranged each & every year by Bangla Academy.

6.The government in its budget 2020 has announced a National Mission on Quantum Technologies & Applications (NM-QTA) with a total budget outlay of Rs 8000 Crore for a period of five years to be implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).Quantum Technology is based on the principles of quantum theory.

7.Operating ratio is a measure of the portion of revenue that goes into meeting the expenses. Hence, the lower the number, the better the performance. In FY 2019-20, Railways spent about Rs 98.41 to earn every Rs 100, according to the Union Budget 2020.Projected operating ratio in FY20-21 is around 97.30%.

8.The third private train of the IRCTC would run between Indore and Varanasi route. The overnight train would have the same rakes as those of the Humsafar Express. IRCTC has started operating private trains on two routes, Delhi-Lucknow and Ahmedabad-Mumbai.Railway Board Chairman- Vinod Kumar Yadav.

9.The government plans to increase investment limit of foreign portfolio investors in corporate bonds from 9% to 15%. In her second Budget presentation, the finance minister Sitharaman said certain government securities will be open for foreign investors.22,000 Cr had given to infrastructure project pipeline.

10.India has raised import tax on crude palm oil to 44% from existing 37.5%. The hike in import duty on palm oil could prompt buyers to increase purchases of rival edible oils such as soyoil and sunflower oil. India is the world’s biggest palm oil importer.Under ASEAN agreement, the concessional rate is 37.5%.

11.The govt will allow NBFCs to extend invoice financing To MSMEs, FM announced. Centre has asked the RBI to mull extending MSME recast window by one more year. MSMEs account for about 45% of manufacturing output, more than 40% of exports & over 28% of GDP.Indian MSMEs have physical capital valued at less than 10 Cr.

12.Madhya Pradesh has bagged the 1st position for the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Women & Child Development Minister Smriti Irani will present the award. Indore district has bagged the 1st place for better performance of the scheme.Incentive of 5000 Rs is given to pregnant women under the PMMVY.

13.FM announced that a task force will be set up to recommend marriageable age for women. Rs 9,500 crore has been provided for senior citizens and Divyangs, while Rs 35,600 crore has been allocated for nutrition related programme in FY21 in the budget 2020.Rs 85,000 Cr has been allocated for SCs & OBCs in the Budget.

12.The Indian Navy carried out a 5-day coastal security exercise, 'Matla Abhiyaan', with personnel of two naval boats, holding interactions with all stakeholders along the riverine border with Bangladesh. It was aimed to spread awareness on coastal security.Exercise was named after Matla River.

13.In a bid to encourage artisans & workers the Rajasthan government is looking to tie up online platforms for branding & marketing of Khadi and generate more employment. 2-day International Conference on Globalisation of Khadi held at Jaipur, Rajasthan.Rajasthan & CII jointly organized the conference.

14.In tennis, Serbia's Novak Djokovic won his record 8th Men's singles title in Australian Open in Melbourne. He beat first-time Australian Open finalist Dominic Thiem of Austria. Joe Salisbury of UK and American Rajeev Ram clinched the men’s doubles title.Timea Babos & Kristina Mladenovic won the women's doubles title.
