ONE LINER OF THE DAY 14th JAN 2020


1.Govt appointed Michael Debaprata Patra as the 4th Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Patra is currently the Executive Director of the Monetary Policy Department. He will take over the position lying vacant after Viral Acharya's exit last year.Patra will serve a term of three years.

2.Road, Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that World Bank & Asian Development Bank have approved 7000 Cr each to remove black spots and enhance road safety. Tamil Nadu has been awarded the best performing state in reducing road accidents.Road Safety Stakeholders' Meet held in New Delhi.

3.India-Bangladesh I&B Ministers' Meet 2020 will be held in New Delhi on 14 January. Bangladesh Information Minister Muhammad H Mahmud will participate in the meet. Prakash Javadekar is the minister in charge of Indian Information & Broadcasting ministry.Bangladesh Capital-Dhaka, Currency- Bangladeshi taka.

4.Japan Coast Guard Ship ‘Echigo’ has arrived Chennai on a five-day goodwill visit. It will be participating in the Annual Joint Exercise ‘Sahyog-Kaijin’ with the Indian Coast Guard off Chennai for strengthening bilateral ties. Exercise started since 2000.This is the 19th such exercise being conducted.

5.WB has forecasted Sri Lanka’s economic growth at 3.3% for 2020 saying the growth is likely to remain below 4% in next 3 years. In 2020 Global Economic Prospects report WB maintains the same forecast of 3.7% of economic growth in Sri Lanka for 2021 &2022.Sri Lankan President-Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

6.Retail inflation rose to about 5-and-half year high of 7.35% in December 2019 mainly due to rise in prices of vegetables as onions. As per NSO reports, the spike in inflation in the vegetable segment was 60.5% during the month compared to December 2018.Overall retail inflation based on CPI-5.54% in November 2019.

7.Centre is implementing PMFBY to provide financial support to farmers suffering crop loss/damage arising out of unforeseen events. It was launched in February 2016. Uniform premium of 2% to be paid by farmers for all Kharif crops & 1.5% for all Rabi crops.PMFBY-Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.

8.Govt has announced a scheme for voluntary registration of all drones & their operators to tackle illegal drones. The registration can be done by 31st of January. Civil Aviation Ministry said in a notice that those who fail to register will face action.Civil Aviation Minister-Hardeep Singh Puri.

9.India's flagship global conference on geopolitics and geo-economics Raisina Dialogue will begin on 14 January with Modi attending the inaugural session. Dialogue is jointly organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation.It is a multilateral conference held annually in New Delhi.

10.Makar Sankranti is being celebrated in various parts of the country with religious fervour. It also comes as Thanksgiving to Mother Nature. In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti- is popularly known as Uttarayan and the main attraction is international kite festival.Makar means Capricorn whereas Sankranti denotes transition.

11.Bhogi is being celebrated in Tamil Nadu & several other parts of South India. It marks the last day of the month of Maargazhi in the Tamil calendar. On Bhogi day, redundant or unusable materials are disposed of, to welcome the auspicious Pongal festival.Bhogi is a prelude to the grand Pongal festivities.

12.In Tamil Nadu, fresh investment proposals worth 6608 Crore rupees have been approved. Proposals have been cleared by the higher-level committee on industrial guidance and single window system, led by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy.Fifteen new investments were given the nod.

13.M. Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the Centre of Excellence for Studies (CESCT) in Classical Telugu at Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. CESCT under the Central Institute of Indian Languages was earlier functioning from Mysore & has been now shifted to Nellore.Inauguration will take place on 21st January 2020.

14.Since 2017, Armed Forces Veterans Day is observed each year on 14 January as a mark of respect & recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal KM Cariappa OBE-the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces who retired on 14 Jan 53.Day honours sacrifice of veterans in the service of the nation.
