ONE LINER OF THE DAY 4th MAY 2019


1.BSNL has become the first operator to begin optical fibre-based high-speed broadband service in Pulwama with launch of 'Bharat Fibre'.It is the first such FTTH (Fibre-to-the-home) service set up in the Kashmir Valley under this unique revenue share model.Anupam Shrivastav is the CMD of government-owned BSNL.

2.The India Meteorological Department, issued a “yellow alert” for the Odisha coast, predicting heavy rainfall at some places due to Cyclone Fani. Yellow alert indicates severely bad weather, warning people who are at risk to take preventive action.The word ‘Fani’,means 'Snake' or 'hood of snake'.

3.Under the 17th edition of bilateral Varuna Exercise, India and France will hold anti-submarine warfare games off the coast of Djibouti near the Horn of Africa.Varuna 19.1, is being conducted off the Goa coast from May 1-10.

4.The growth rate in air traffic hit a 5 year low,affected by low growth of 3.9 percent in the March quarter as against 14.9 percent in the first three quarters.Cargo traffic growth also fell to 6 percent, as against double-digit growth in the past 2 years.Domestic cargo traffic rose 12% in FY19 up from 8.1% last year.

5.The UK parliament became the first national legislative body in the world to declare a “climate change emergency".This move is in response to Extinction Rebellion protests that blocked traffic in key parts of central London for a week in April.Theresa May is the Prime Minister Of U.K.

6.Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway(BRKA) buys Amazon share, the exact amount will be disclosed in Berkshire's quarterly report to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission later this month.Berkshire Hathaway owns about 250 million shares of Apple.

7.Former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar was conferred with France’s highest civilian honour, Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Legion d’Honneur, for his contribution to India-France space cooperation.France’s Ambassador to India is Alexandre Ziegler.

8.According to Takehiko Nakao, President and Chairperson, Asian Development Bank.The Asia-Pacific region is expected to power ahead growing at 5.7% this year but escalating trade tensions are a source of worry,ADB's lending grew to a record $21.6 billion in 2018.

9.The World Bank increased emergency support for the three southern African countries, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi affected by a devastating cyclone that killed hundreds in March to $700 million.World Bank President- David Malpass.

10.CPM leader and former finance minister, V Viswanatha Menon passed away at the age of 92 in Kochi, Kerala. He was also known as “Ambadi Viswam” . He served as the Finance Minister in 1987 during the Left Democratic Front government led by E.K. Nayanar.Arun Jaitley is the current Finance Minister of India.
