1.India jumped 13 places to achieve the 130th spot in this year's Index of Economic Freedom published by the Heritage Foundation, an American think-tank.As per the latest edition, India moved up to the 130th spot, up from 143 in 2017.India's economic freedom score was 54.5.Hong Kong topped the index followed by Singapore and New Zealand.
2.The world’s first long-distance electric bus line was inaugurated in Paris on 12th April.The bus will cover the 160 kilometers between Paris and Amiens in northern France in just over 2 hours.The bus can travel as far as 250 kilometers on one 5-hour battery charge. It emits no pollutants at all and creates less noise than conventional buses.
3.Veteran Hindi film actor Shri Vinod Khanna was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema. This was announced during the 65th National Film Awards. Some of the other prominent winners in various categories for this year National Film Awards included Assamese movie ‘Village Rockstars’ in Best Feature Film category and ‘Baahubali - The Conclusion’ in the Best Popular Film providing Wholesome Entertainment category. The Feature Film Central panel was headed by Shekhar Kapur.
4.On the eve of the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial at 26, Alipur Road in Delhi on April 13th.This is the place where Dr. Ambedkar attained Mahaparinirvana on 6th December 1956.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the memorial on March 21, 2016.
5.Gujarat Government approved setting up a 5000 MW capacity solar park at the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), which would be the largest such entity in the world after its completion.The solar power generation project would be set up in 11,000 hectares of land.The project will contribute significantly in achieving the target of producing 175 gigawatt of electricity by 2022.
6.Approximately 1.5 Million rural residents in State of Madhya Pradesh are going to directly benefit from improved livelihoods, education and mobility with the USD $ 140-Million loan approved by the Board of Directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in a Meeting held recently in Beijing.The Project, co-financed with the World Bank, aims to improve the rural road connectivity and management for residents of about 5,640 villages who use the rural roads for daily activities.
7.Siddharth Varadarajan, the founding editor of The Wire, has won the Shorenstein Journalism Award.The award, given annually by Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center.The award honours journalists who have “produced outstanding reporting on Asia and contributed significantly to Western understanding of the region”.
8.The seventh edition of Home Expo India 2018, organised by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), was inaugurated at India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida.Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani inaugurated the fair, while Ajay Tamta, Minister of State for Textiles, was the guest of honour. Home Expo India 2018 will generate business deals for direct import.
9.The government appointed Bhanu Pratap Sharma as the new Chairman of Banks Board Bureau, which primarily recommends senior executive appointments in state-run banks.Sharma will replace former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai, whose term ended on March 31.Notably, Sharma is the former Secretary of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
10.Enveloping Assam’s ‘agri-business’ by focusing on farmers income, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed to make farmers’ interests a priority. He advocated priority outlining and creation of adequate amenities for the farmers under the Assam Agri-business and Rural Transformation Project (APART). Reviewing APART, an agriculture department project, in a meeting in Guwahati, CM Sonowal asked the implementing agency to take into account the interests and priorities of the farmers.
