ONE LINER OF THE DAY 14th JAN 2018.


1.Gallup International Association (GIA) has ranked Indian PM Narendra Modi as the No. 3 world leader in its annual survey. This is the highest ever rank bagged by any Indian PM in the GIA global polls. The first rank went to French President Emmanuel Macron (net score 21), followed by German chancellor Angela Merkel (net score of 20). US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin were ranked at the eleventh and sixth position respectively in the survey.

2.In Assam, Uruka was being celebrated on 13th January 2018 on the eve of Bhogali Bihu, the post-harvest festival.Bihu is the chief festival in the Assam state of India. It refers to a set of three different festivals: Rongali or Bohag Bihu observed in April, Kongali or Kati Bihu observed in October, and Bhogali or Magh Bihu observed in January

3.Clouded Leopard National Park is a national park in the Sipahijola Wildlife Sanctuary TripuraIndia. It covers an area of about 5.08 square kilometres .

4.The new passports being printed will no longer have the last page with the holder’s address – it will be blank instead.Passports may soon stop serving as valid proof of address in India, with the Ministry of Externala Affairs announcing that the last page will no longer be printed in the new passports issued.
The last page of the passport includes the father or legal guardian’s name, along with the names of the holder’s mother, spouse and their address.
5.National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is the umbrella organisation for all retail payment systems in India, which aims to allow all Indian citizens to have unrestricted access to e-payment services.Founded in 2008, NPCI is a not-for-profit organisation registered under section 8 of the Companies Act 2013. The organisation is owned by a consortium of major banks, and has been promoted by the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India. Its recent work of developing Unified Payments Interface aims to move India to a cashless society with only digital transactions.
It has successfully completed the development of a domestic card payment network called RuPay, reducing the dependency on international card schemes. The RuPay card is now accepted at all the ATMsPoint-of-Sale terminals and most of the online merchants in the country. More than 300 cooperative banks and the Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in the country have also issued RuPay ATM cards.

6.Senior sports administrator Anil Khanna was today named Chairman of the Finance Commission of the Indian Olympic Association, which also formed a four- member advisory committee.The IOA also formed a Medical Commission and Games Technical Conduct Committee and nominated office bearers of IOA and National Sports Federations (NSFs) to the Committees.The advisory committee comprises Tarlochan Singh, GS Mander, S Regunathan and BS Landge.

7.In a historical move, senior advocate Indu Malhotra is all set to become the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court. Malhotra’s name was cleared unanimously by the Supreme Court collegium consisting of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph. Along with her, the Collegium also recommended that Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph also be elevated to the Supreme Court.
8.The collegium system of appointment of judges is popularly referred to as judges-selecting-judges.


The collegium system was created by two judgements of the Supreme Court in 1990s in which a body of senior apex court judges headed by the Chief Justice of India selected persons and recommended their names for appointment as judges.

9.In perhaps the most significant exposition of its 'Act East' policy, India will invite the heads of state or government of all 10 Asean nations for the Republic Day parade. Asean is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and has as members Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Republic Day 2018 will be the first time ever that so many leaders will together be chief guests at the parade which showcases India's military might.

10.External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj  visit to three South East Asian countries – Thailand, Indonesia,SingaporeThailand Capital- Bangkok, Currency- Thai baht.Indonesia Capital- Jakarta, Currency- Indonesian rupiah.
