ONE LINER OF THE DAY 2nd MARCH 2020


1.In Tennis, World Number 2 Rafael Nadal captured his 1st title of the year, defeating Taylor Fritz in the final of the ATP Mexico Open. Nadal ceded the world No.1 ranking to Novak Djokovic after the Australian Open, where the Serb won a record 8th title.Heather Watson won the women’s Mexican Open title.

2.Asian Development Bank will provide a total of USD 4 million (about ₹29 crore) to help developing countries in Asia and Pacific to fight the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The funds will be available for all ADB developing member countries.ADB announced USD 4 million for this earlier in February.

3.Abu Dhabi Sports Council cancelled the remaining rounds of the 2020 UAE Tour after 2 Italian participants were tested positive for the CIVID-19. This is the only World Tour Cycle race held in West Asia. The competition had started on the 23rd of February.It has always been an event populated by sprinters.

4.The month-long Ekushey book fair ended in Dhaka. This year a total of 4919 new titles were released. On the birth centenary year of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as Bangabandhu, this year’s fair was dedicated to him.PM Sheikh Hasina had inaugurated the book fair on February 2.

5.Prahlad Singh Patel will launch the multilingual Incredible India website in New Delhi. The website which was hosted in English & Hindi is now being launched in Chinese, Arabic & Spanish to project India as a ‘must-visit’ destination across the globe.Prahlad Singh Patel is the Union Tourism Minister.

6.Under the CSR initiatives, Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India contributed Rs 1 Crore towards National Sports Development Fund under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme for the top athletes of the Country selected for Tokyo Olympics & beyond.Chairman & Managing Director of SPMCIL- Tripti Patra Ghosh.

7.Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated the Pusa Krishi Vigyan Mela-2020 in New Delhi. Government assures Rs.6,000 annually to farmers covered under the PM-KISAN scheme.Govt also provides loan of Rs.1,60,000 under Kisan Credit Card.

9.Rakhigarhi, Haryana will soon emerge as a major tourist destination on the map of India. Rakhigarhi hit headlines after FM Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech placed it among 5 archaeological sites that the Centre proposes to develop as an iconic site.It is the largest sites of the Harappan civilisation.

10.Social Justice & Empowerment minister Thaawarchand Gehlot will inaugurate the Exhibition-cum-Fair ‘EKAM Fest’ organised by National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation (NHFDC) to promote craftsmanship & products of Divyang Artisans & Entrepreneurs.Ekam-Entrepreneurship, Knowledge, Awareness, Marketing.

11.Minister of State for Shipping (I/C)-Mansukh Mandaviya chaired 3-day Ports Review Meeting Chintan Baithak in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu which concluded on 1 March 2020. He asked Ports to implement the best practices followed worldwide in the Maritime Sector.Government has “Vision-2030” for Maritime Sector.

12.World Productivity Congress, the world’s largest convention for productivity development, is back in India after a gap of 45 years. The 19th edition of WPC will be held on May 6 to May 8, 2020 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, Bangalore.World Confederation of Productivity Science is the organiser.

13.RaIDer-X, a new explosive detection device, developed by DRDO & IISc Bangalore was unveiled at the National Workshop organised by HEMRL Pune on Explosive Detection (NWED-2020). Bulk explosive in concealed condition can also be detected by the device.HEMRL Pune is a premier laboratory of DRDO.

14.As a unique initiative of Indian Air Force, the IAF and Savitribai Phule Pune University entered into an academic collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a 'Chair of Excellence' at Department of Defence & Strategic Studies.Name- Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Chair of Excellence.

15.Scientists said that they found substantial divergences between the 2 species-Chinese red pandas & Himalayan red pandas-in 3 genetic markers in an analysis of DNA from 65 of the animals. There are a total population of roughly 10000 red pandas in the wild.Red pandas are mammals that dwell in Asia’s high forests.

16.The Khelo India University Games concluded in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Panjab University, Chandigarh took home the champions trophy-winning 46 medals including 17 gold, 19 silver, and 10 bronze. Savitribai Phule Pune University claimed the second position.Punjabi University, Patiala declared as the second runners up.

17.Former India hockey player Balbir Singh Kullar, who was a part of the 1968 Olympics bronze-winning team, has died at the age of 77. /  Veteran athletics coach & Dronacharya awardee Joginder Singh Saini, who groomed some of India's finest track & field stars, died at the age of 90 in Patiala due to age related issues

18.To commemorate its 19th foundation day, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, GoI organized a Stakeholder Consultation to develop a vision towards building an energy efficient India. Bureau of Energy Efficiency was formed on 1st March 2002.Star Labelling Programme has been launched on a voluntary basis.
