1.President Ram Nath Kovind nominated Justice AK Sikri as the Executive Chairman (EC) of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).The post got vacant after the retirement of Justice Madan B Lokur.The NALSA was constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free legal services to the weaker sections of the society and to organise the Lok Adalats.
2.The government of India gave 6-crore free cooking gas (LPG) connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on 2 January 2019.Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu handed over the 6 croreth LPG connection under PMUY to Jasmina Khatoon from Delhi.The PMUY was launched on 1 May 2016, with a target to give 5 crore connections by March 2019.
3.India achieved electrification in 100% households in 25 states at the end of 2018. Now, only about 10.48 lakh households are left to be electrified in 4 states – Assam, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, and Chhattisgarh.The ‘Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana’ (Saubhagya) in September 2017 to achieve the goal of universal household electrification in the country by 31 March 2019.
4.The 44th Global Summit of the International Advertising Association (IAA) will be held in Kochi from February 20 to 22, 2019.The theme of the summit is ‘Brand Dharma’.It is for the first time an Indian city is hosting the summit.The last three summits were held in Washington DC, Moscow and Beijing.
5.The Union Home Ministry approved a Uttar Pradesh government proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj.In October 2018, the UP government had proposed the change in name of Allahabad to Prayagraj.
6.Justice Cholendra Shamsher J B Rana took over as the new Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court on 2 January 2019.President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath to Justice Rana.He will have a tenure of four years.He succeeded Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra, who retired on 1st January 2019.
7.The number of complaints registered at banking ombudsman offices have seen a 25% increase in the fiscal year 2018, with the majority of these complaints coming from urban centres owing to increased awareness and poor internal redressal mechanisms of banks."The banking ombudsman offices in tier-1 cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad accounted for more than 57% of the total complaints received by all BO offices," the RBI Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India has stated.
8.The cabinet has approved the merger of Vijaya Bank & Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.After this merger, Bank of Baroda will become the third biggest public sector bank. The merger will be effective from April 1. This is also the first ever three-way merger in Indian banking.Bank of Baroda (BoB) finalised the share swap ratio for the merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with itself. As per the Scheme of Amalgamation, shareholders of Vijaya Bank will get 402 equity shares of BoB for every 1,000 shares held. In case of Dena Bank, its shareholders will get 110 shares for every 1,000 shares of BoB.
9.Veteran cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar, who trained Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkarand Vinod Kambli, among others, passed away following a heart attack.
10.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 106th Indian Science Congress (ISC-2019) at Jalandhar, Punjab. The ISC is an annual congregation that witnesses deliberations by top scientific minds of the country.The theme for which is 'Future: India-Science and Technology'. This will be his 5th address to Indian Science Congress after assuming office as Prime Minister.
