1.Renowned Hindi poet, the veteran journalist, and film critic Vishnu Khare dies on 19 September 2018.Khare was a recipient of many awards and honors, including an Order of the White Rose of Finland for his Hindi translation of the national epic of Finland, Kalevala.
2.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the revised cost estimate of a project to improve the safety of 198 dams across the country.The project will improve the safety and operational performance of dams.The scheme envisages rehabilitation of 198 existing dam projects located in Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
3.The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has set up a committee to look into the concept of a regulatory sandbox in the country.The 10-member committee will have IRDAI general manager RK Sharma will be the convener.The committee will look into the key issues that fintech poses across the insurance value chain.
4.The Union Cabinet cleared an ordinance to make instant triple talaq a criminal offence.However, the amended triple talaq bill provides for additional safeguards, including a provision for bail to an accused before the start of the trial.The Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill makes instant triple talaq illegal and imposes a jail term of up to three years.
5.The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has approved a new scheme- ‘Atal Bimit Vyakti Kalyan Yojna’ for Insured Persons covered under the Employees’ State Insurance Act.This scheme is a relief payable in cash directly to their Bank Account in case of unemployment and while they search for new engagement.The ESIC also approved the proposal for increasing the funeral expenses.
6.Exercise Aviaindra is an Air Force level exercise between India and the Russian Federation.Exercise Aviaindra 18 is being conducted at Lipetsk, Russia from 17 Sep to 28 Sep 2018 and will be conducted in Jodhpur, India from 10 Dec to 22 Dec 2018.The aim of the exercise is focused towards anti-terrorist operations.
7.India has contributed a $1 million for the installation of solar panels on the roof of the imposing UN building.The contribution will help reduce carbon footprint and promote sustainable energy.India is the “first responder” to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for climate action.
8.British writer Daisy Johnson became the youngest author to be shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize 2018.She has been shortlisted for her mother-daughter tale, “Everything Under”.The 27-year-old joins fellow UK authors Anna Burns for “Milkman” and Robin Robertson for “The Long Take”.
9.The Delhi High Court constituted a committee to deal with the problems faced by lawyers and litigants in entering the building housing National Company Law Tribunal and National Company Law Appellate Tribunal.The committee is headed by the Registrar General of Delhi High Court .The committee will also comprise two members each nominated by the Bar associations of NCLT and NCLAT.
10.Reserve Bank of India has appointed four people as members in local boards.Rakesh Jain and Sachin Chaturvedi have been appointed as the members in Southern and Eastern local board of the central bank.Revathy Iyer and Raghvendra Narayan Dubey have been appointed as the member in the Northern local board.Iyer and Chaturvedi have also been nominated as Directors on the central board.
