ONE LINER OF THE DAY 8th August 2018


1.DMK chief M Karunanidhi died on 7th August 2018 in Chennai.Muthuvel Karunanidhi was an Indian writer and politician who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms and twenty years between 1969 and 2011.

2.A facial recognition system using artificial intelligence will be used at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.The Tokyo Olympics will be the first games to have this kind of security system using facial recognition technology.It is aimed at strengthening security and preventing terrorism, as well as shortening waiting times to lower athlete stress.

3.NITI Aayog, United Nations in India and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) are jointly organizing a Government and Business Partnership Conclave on 8th August 2018.The conclave will focus on the interrelated sectors of water, energy and green industry.The main purpose is to explore the roles and contributions of the business sector in the implementation of SDGs in India.

4.The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched the Do not Call (DND) 2.0 and MyCall apps with the Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance (UMANG) platform.UMANG provides a single platform for all Indian citizens to access, pan-India, e-Gov services.MyCall is an intuitive and user-friendly application for crowd-sourced voice call quality monitoring.

5.The Centre appointed S. Gurumurthy and Satish Kashinath Marathe as part time non-official directors on the central board of Reserve Bank of India for four years.Gurumurthy is a noted chartered accountant, economic and political columnist, and editor of Tamil magazine Thuglak.The proposal for the appointment came from the Finance Ministry’s Department of Financial Services.

6.To mark 25 years of its existence, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) unveiled a new logo symbolizing integrity, excellence, trust and commitment.The National Stock Exchange of India Limited is the leading stock exchange of India, located in Mumbai.The NSE was established in 1992 as the first demutualized electronic exchange in the country.

7.The Jatayu sculpture at the Jatayu Earth Center (JEC) at Chadayamangalam in Kollam district, Kerala, said to be world’s largest bird sculpture, will be inaugurated on August 17 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This Rs 100 crore-project is a creation by film director and sculptor Rajiv Anchal.

8.The National Handloom Day is being celebrated in India on : 7th August.The objective of the day seeks to highlight the contribution of handloom to the socioeconomic development of the country and promote handlooms to increase the income and pride of weavers.

9.On August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m., the US B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the 20 kiloton atomic bomb "Little Boy," on Hiroshima, which devastated most of the city, killing 80,000 people instantly, leaving 12,000 missing and 40,000 wounded.

10.On August 9, 1945, at 11:01 a.m., another US bomber dropped the 21 kiloton atomic bomb "Fat Man" on another Japanese city - Nagasaki - killing about 40,000 people and leaving 60,000 injured.
