ONE LINER OF THE DAY 4th August 2018


1.The Supreme Court will have three serving women judges for the first time, after the Centre cleared the elevation of Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee.The other two judges are R Banumathi, appointed in August 2014, and Indu Malhotra, appointed in April 2018. Notably, SC will have a total of 22 male judges including two new male appointees. 

2.President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zanu-PF – Zimbabwe’s ruling party, was declared the winner of the first Presidential Elections without the former’s successor, Robert Mugabe.

3.Fino Payments Bank has been barred by the Reserve Bank of India from adding new customers since the end of May 2018.The central bank in its auditing of payments banks in May found Fino Payments non-compliant with the operational guidelines laid down by it.

4.Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank launched a new deposit scheme ‘Vikas Bonanza 456’, offering higher rate of interest. The scheme is applicable to all segments of depositors.

5.Facebook announced the launch of a “Digital Literacy Library” to help young people build the skills they need to safely enjoy online technology.The interactive lessons and videos, developed in partnership with the Youth and Media team at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University for educators of youth aged 11 to 18, can be downloaded for free.

6.Typhoon Jongdari made landfall in Shanghai’s coastal Jinshan district, according to the National Meteorological Centre. The situation has been handled in a timely manner and the rain has weakened, it said.

7.In order to facilitate the growth of health-care sector, the Center recently approved the proposal of setting up of All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state of Tripura.This would not only help people avail better treatment but will also generate employment opportunities for the aspiring upcoming qualified doctors of the state.

8.Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur launched an awareness campaign named “Horn Not Ok” along with a statewide mobile app “Shoor Nahin” or no noise in Shimla and Manali.The Chief Minister said “the state is known for its salubrious climate and peaceful environment. Thus, it is vital that each one of us contribute towards maintaining the pristine environment of the state.”The mobile app “Shoor Nahin”, is an initiative to check noise pollution in the state. The app has been developed to report any noise pollution complaint to authorities.

9.Amangarh Tiger Reserve is a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in India. It is located in Amangarh in Bijnor district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It has an area of 80 km2 and is one among the only three Tiger Reserves in Uttar Pradesh, the other two being Dudhwa Tiger Reserve and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.

10.President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for the years 2013-2017, in New Delhi. The Outstanding Parliamentarian Award was presented to the Best Parliamentarians from 2013 to 2017 for their remarkable contributions.Winners of the award are listed below:
1. Dr Najma Heptullah (for year 2013),2. Hukum Dev Narayan (for year 2014),3. Ghulam Nabi Azad (for year 2015),4. Dinesh Trivedi (for year 2016),5. Bhartruhari Mahtab (for year 2017).
