1.Govt has set up a central body – National Water Informatics Centre to maintain a comprehensive water resources data.NWIC will be a single window source of updated data on water resources in India.NWIC will collaborate with national & international research institutes to provide technical support to central & state organisations dealing with water emergency response of hydrological extremes.
2.India has requested Asian Development Bank to expand its sovereign and non-sovereign operations in the country by providing financial assistance worth $4 billion a year.India also requested ADB President Takehiko Nakao to support its endevour towards an inclusive & sustainable growth accompanied by rapid economic transformation.ADB aims to promote social and economic development in Asia.
3.Union Minister for Road Transport and Water Resourceas Nitin Gadkari on Saturday announced that the Central government will sanction Rs 2,000 crore for inland waterway on Godavari River.He asked Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to come forward to take 10 percent equity each in the special purpose vehicle to be formed by the ministry to execute the project.
4.Delhi will host a six-day-long Festival of Bharat between May 9 and May 14 as a 21st century tribute to the majesty and depth of India’s civilization.The event will be held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi.Scholars, Grammy award winning artistes, rising new stars and prominent public figures will be in attendance.
5.China has launched a new communication satellite “APSTAR-6C” at the southwestern Xichang Satellite Launch Center.The satellite will provide TV transmission, communication, Internet and multimedia services to customers across the Asia-Pacific region.Both the satellite and the rocket were developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
6.Asian Development Bank President Takehiko Nakao has noted that India’s growth in 2018 would pick up to 7.3%.The Bank has also projected that India will remain the fastest growing Asian nation with 7.6% growth in 2019-20.
7.BJP MP Anurag Thakur and cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar has launched ‘Star Khel Mahakumbh’ at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.The initiative has been designed in a manner as to attract participation of at least one lakh youth from across 5000 villages and 800 panchayats.The athletes will compete in volleyball, basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi and athletics.
8.Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will now be celebrated every alternate year & a series of sessions will be held before the event to increase the interests of Indians living within & outside the country.Theme-based sessions will be conducted in which Ministry of External Affairs will invite 12 people including both nationals & NRIs.15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in Varanasi in Jan 2019.
9.Israel has withdrew from a race against Germany & Belgium for 2 seats on United Nations Security Council in 2019-20.Israel was competing with Germany & Belgium for one of the two seats allocated to Western European & Others Group.Security Council is made up of 5 permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia & US while 10 other seats are filled by elected members that serve 2 yr stints.
10.Veteran actress and social activist Shabana Azmi has been nominated as the Global Leadership Ambassador for Women in Public Service Project (WPSP), a Hillary Clinton-founded programme aimed at empowering the next generation of women around the world.
