ONE LINER OF THE DAY 5th April 2018.


1.The Union Minister for Railways and Coal Shri Piyush Goyal launched UTTAM App for Coal Quality Monitoring. UTTAM stands for – Unlocking Transparency by Third Party Assessment of Mined Coal (uttam.coalindia.in). The Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited (CIL) developed UTTAM,aims to provide an App for all citizens and coal consumers to monitor the process of Third Party Sampling of coal across CIL subsidiaries.UTTAM App ensures accountability, transparency, effectiveness and efficiency in coal ecosystem. It provides a platform for monitoring of sampling and coal dispatches. The App is designed with an aim to make the citizens a stakeholder in the coal ecosystem.

2.International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is observed all over the world on 4 April.This day is observed to create awareness about the threat of mines, unexploded grenades and other explosive hazards.The theme for International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2018 is ‘Advancing Protection, Peace and Development.’

3.The Election Commission (EC) will set up Sakhi/Pink polling booths for the first time in the Karnataka assembly elections.These pink polling booths will have completely female staff including presiding officers, polling officers, micro observers and security personnel.The pink booths are aimed at empowering women and increasing their participation in the poll process.

4.The trial run of the first container train between India and Bangladesh was flagged off from Kolkata city.The train left for Bangladesh with 60 containers loaded with almost 1,200 tonnes of de-oiled cake, used as a raw material for animal feed.It will pass through Sealdah, Naihati, Ranaghat and Gede in India and Darsana and Ishurdi in Bangladesh before reaching Bangabandhu West station, 117 kilometres off capital city of Dhaka.

5.Ministry of Tourism in close collaboration with Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) launched “Adopt a Heritage Project” to provide world class tourist facilities at the various natural/cultural heritage sites, monuments and other tourist sites to make them tourist friendly, enhance their tourist potential and cultural importance in a planned and phased manner across the country.The project envisages that selected public sector companies, private sector companies and individuals will develop tourist amenities at heritage sites. They would become ‘Monument Mitra’ and adopt the sites essentially under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity.

6.India and Azerbaijan have inked two documents for the visa waiver for diplomatic, official and service passports holders and cooperation between diplomatic training institutes.The agreements were signed during the ongoing visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to that country.Mrs Swaraj is there to be part of 18th NAM Ministerial Conference in Baku.

7.Private sector lender IndusInd Bank said it has received RBI's approval to buy the securities services arm of IL&FS.In March 2017, the bank entered an agreement with Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services, the promoter shareholder of IL&FS Securities Services Ltd (ISSL), to acquire 100 per cent stake in ISSL.

8.In a major achievement, India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest producer of crude steel in February, according to the Steel Users Federation of India (Sufi).At present, China is the largest producer of crude steel in the world, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the production.

9.To relax algorithm trading norms at commodity derivatives exchanges, SEBI raised the limit to process up to 100 orders per second by a user for such trade from the existing limit of 20 orders per second.Algorithmic trading or ‘algo’ in market parlance refers to orders generated at a super-fast speed by use of advanced mathematical models.‘Algo’ is used by large institutional investors.

10.Qatar-based Doha Bank has set up the first branch in the Chennai taking the total number of branches in the country to three, a top official said.Doha Bank currently has a branch in Mumbai, Kochi and Chennai, respectively.The Chennai branch will assist the bank's growing customer base in India offering a host of services including corporate, retail, treasury, trade, finance and foreign exchange services.
