1.President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari inaugurated an International Conference on Human Rights in South Asia in Kathmandu. The conference is organized by the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal.The representatives of Human Rights Commissions and institutions, human rights activists from 20 countries including India are participating in the 3-day event. The theme of the conference is "Identifying Challenges, Assessing Progress, Moving Forward: Addressing Impunity and Realizing Human Rights in South Asia".
2.At present, 11 weak PSBs out of the 21 State-owned banks are under the PCA, which kicks in when banks breach regulatory norms on issues such as minimum capital, amount of non-performing assets and return on assets.The 11 banks already under the NPA framework are IDBI Bank, Bank of India, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Dena Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, United Bank of India, Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank.
3.India will build a strategic railway link between Raxaul in Bihar and Kathmandu in Nepal to facilitate people-to-people contact and bulk movement of goods.The 2 Prime Ministers agreed to construct the new electrified rail line, which will be financed by India.The 3 other railway projects in the pipeline are New Jalpaiguri-Kakarbhitta, Nautanwa-Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj Road-Nepalgunj.
4.The UN World Tourism Organization said it has appointed FC Barcelona's Argentine star Lionel Messi as an ambassador to promote responsible tourism.The UN body defines “responsible tourism” as tourism that “helps maximise the sector's benefits while minimising its potentially negative impact on the environment, cultural heritage and societies across the globe”World Tourism Organization chief: Zurab Pololikashvili
5.NABARD has come out with a ‘Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) Framework’ for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).The framework is aimed at enabling RRBs that fail to meet prudential requirements like capital adequacy to take self-corrective action.The PCA will be invoked if RRBs fail to meet the ‘capital to risk-weighted assets ratio’, assets (NPAs), and profitability (Return on assets).
6.The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has recently replaced existing QR code on eAadhaar having resident’s demographic details now with a secured digitally-signed QR Code which contains demographics along with photograph of the Aadhaar holder.The new feature, the digitally-signed QR code, will contain photo of the Aadhaar holder in addition to existing facility of demographic details, in turn allowing various user agencies like banks to verify authenticity of Aadhaar card offline.
7.India and World Expo 2020 signed participants contract for India’s pavilion in the prestigious World Expo 2020 held once in 5 years.The contract provides for the setting up of India pavilion at Expo 2020 on an extra large plot (about one acre) in the ‘Opportunity’ segment. This is tune with the great opportunity for economic activity that India provides today on the way to becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2025. Focus will be given to India’s advances in Space, Pharma, IT, Renewable Energy, Telecom sectors.
8.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet leaders of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark & Iceland for the first India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm on April 17.Modi will be the first Indian PM to visit Stockholm since 1988.The six leaders will exchange views on regional and global issues such as environment and climate, trade and investment and discuss areas of future cooperation.
9.Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 16th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting in New Delhi. It is the largest gathering of Ministers from energy consuming, producing and transit countries.Hosted by India and co-hosted by China and Korea, the meeting aims to focus on how global shifts, transition policies and new technologies influence market stability and future investment in the energy sector.
10.Rishad Premji, Board member of Wipro Ltd. has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) for 2018-19.Premji has been a member of NASSCOM’s Executive Council and was the Vice Chairman for the previous year.He succeeds Raman Roy, who served as Chairman of NASSCOM for the year 2017-18.
