ONE LINER OF THE DAY 11th JAN 2018


1.The Supreme Court on issued notice to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the SNC-Lavalin corruption case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had moved against Vijayan’s discharge by the Kerala High Court. Kerala Governor : P. Sathasivam.

2.Transport for London (TfL) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways India (MoRTH) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation in urban transport policy, planning, technology transfer and institutional organisation for transport.Union Minister Nitin Gadkari along with Chief Technology Officer and Director of Customer Experience TfL, Shashi Verma signed the MoU.


3.In a major digital initiative to help plan the traffic flows and optimize freight operations,Ministry of Railways launched Smart Freight Operation Optimisation & Real Time Information (SFOORTI) App for Freight Managers which provides features for monitoring and managing freight business using Geographic Information System (GIS) Views and Dashboard. With this application, movement of freight trains on Geographic Information System (GIS) view can be tracked.


4.The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is the regional intergovernmental organization and geopoliticalunion of nations in South Asia. Its member states include AfghanistanBangladeshBhutanIndiaNepal, the MaldivesPakistan and Sri Lanka. SAARC was founded in Dhaka on 8 December 1985. Its secretariat is based in Kathmandu, Nepal. 5.After the whole controversy surrounding reported security breach against Aadhaar, the Unique Identification Authority of India on Jan 2018 will bring in two-layer security to reinforce privacy protection for users.The new proposed measures involve giving virtual identification for the ID holders, so that the actual Aadhaar numbers need not be shared by them to authenticate their identity. It means that a 16-digit temporary number will be used instead of the Aadhaar number. The UIDAI said the Virtual ID software would be released by March 1.

The virtual identification can be generated, retrieved, revoked or replaced through UIDAI’s portal, mobile app, enrollment centers, etc.
6.Imaging company Eastman Kodak Co has tied up with a London-headquartered blockchain development firm to launch its own photo-centric cryptocurrency, KodakCoin.The partnership with Wenn Digital for KodakCoin is part of a broader initiative called KodakOne, an image rights management platform that aims to empower photographers and agencies to take greater control of their work.
7.Uttarakhand is now second only to Karnataka in terms of tiger population in India.Karnataka has 5 Tiger Reserves namely, Bandipur, Bhadra, Nagarahole, Dandeli-Anshi and BRT Tiger Reserves .

8.Uttarakhand has two tiger reserves – The Corbett Tiger Reserve and the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The 2 New Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand are Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary, which falls under the Terai Arc Landscape spanning across India and Nepal, and the Surai Range in the Terai East division.

9.Mankidia, one of the 13 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in Odisha, were denied habitat rights inside the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) under the historic Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, as the State Forest Department has objected on grounds that tribals could be attacked by wild animals, especially tigers.Mankidia, a marginalised group that critically depends on making rope with siali fibre that’s richly available in Similipal, would now be deprived of the non-timber forest produce.

10.The Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organisation comprising 10 Southeast Asian states which promotes intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economicpoliticalsecuritymilitaryeducational and socio-cultural integration amongst its members and Asian states. Since its formation on 8 August 1967 by IndonesiaMalaysia, the PhilippinesSingapore and Thailand, the organisation's membership has expanded to include BruneiCambodiaLaosMyanmar and Vietnam. Its principal aims include accelerating economic growthsocial progress, and sociocultural evolution among its members, alongside the protection of regional stability and the provision of a mechanism for member countries to resolve differences peacefully. ASEAN is an official United Nations Observer, as well as an active global partner. Communication by members across nations takes place in English.
