1.The Nobel Peace Prize 2018 was won by Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad.The award has been presented to the two figures who have brought attention to ending sexual violence in armed conflict.Mukwege is a gynecologist helping victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nadia is a Yazidi rights activist and survivor of sexual slavery by Islamic State.
2.India and Russia signed a $5.43 billion deal for five S-400 missile system on 5 October 2018The deal was signed during a summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.The S-400 is one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defence systems.
3.The World Bank slightly lowered its growth estimate for East Asia and the Pacific for next year.The World Bank forecast growth rate at 6.0% which is slower than the World Bank’s 6.1% estimate in April 2018.The low in the forecast is due to trade tensions and volatile capital flows cloud the global economic outlook.
4.ICICI Bank managing director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chanda Kochhar on 4 October 2018 quit the bank.Kochhar was reappointed as a director on the board of bank’s broking arm ICICI Securities in August 2018.
5.A Vietnam Coast Guard ship undertook joint exercises with the Indian Coast Guard off the city coast.Coast Guard ships Shaurya, Arnvesh and inreceptor boat C-431 along with a Dornier aircraft and Chetak helicopter participated in the joint exercise – ‘Sahyog HOP TAC-2018’.The exercise was aimed at acquainting the coast guards of the two countries with each others’ capabilities.
6.Senior diplomat Sanjay Verma has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Spain.Sanjay Verma is a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service officer,At present, he is the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
7.The ICICI Bank appointed Sandeep Bakhshi as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank after Chanda Kochhar sought early retirement from the bank.Sandeep Bakshi was the Chief Operating Officer of ICICI Bank.
8.Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of five crore rupees on Federal Bank for non-compliance of certain RBI direction.RBI said Federal Bank had failed to report large borrower exposure for assessment under risk-based supervision.The bank had also failed to pay compensation to customers for the delay in resolution of ATM related complaints.
9.Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) announced that the 36th National Games in Goa will be held from March 30 to April 14 next year.Five sports – Rugby, Wushu, Modern Pentathlon, Lawn Bowl, and Billiards and Snooker -will be added in the Games.Opening and Closing ceremonies will be held at PJN Stadium, Goa.Shooting and cycling events will be held in New Delhi.
10.World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is held annually on October 5.International Teachers Day is observed to commemorate the “Teaching in Freedom” pact signed on October 5, 1966 in Paris.The theme for 2018 is ‘The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher’.Every year, UNESCO celebrates the day to promote the teaching profession.
