1.Catholic Syrian Bank Ltd and Celebrus Capital Ltd have announced a new partnership to offer CSB’s customers online trading and demat services. With this partnership, CSB’s customers can open a Celebrus trading account free of cost and also enjoy preferred rates on brokerage charges/ AMC fees on the demat account. The partnership will enable all CSB clients to open free demat accounts through the Celebrus platform with in-depth research, allowing them to make wise investment decisions.
2.Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani attended the 27th Technological Conference of Indian Jute Industries’ Research Association (IJIRA) on Shaping the Future of Jute in Kolkata, West Bengal.The function was focused on the promotion of geotextiles in the northeast region. Geotextiles are absorbent fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain.
3.Union Minister of Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju inaugurated the country’s first Aviation Multi Skill Development Centre at Chandigarh Airport’s old terminal.The centre, which is a CSR initiative of Airports Authority of India (AAI), will initially train 2,360 students free of cost in three years.It will train about 2,400 youths in eight aviation job roles over the next three years.
4.Tokyo unveiled its long-awaited mascot for the 2020 Olympic Games: a futuristic blue-checked, doe-eyed character with pointy ears and “special powers” that was picked by schoolchildren across mascot-mad Japan. One has an athletic figure and a strong sense of justice. The other is a cherry blossom-inspired superhero.
5.Senior IAS officers R Subrahmanyam and Anil Gopishankar Mukim have been appointed as secretaries of Higher Education, and Mines Department respectively, as part of a major bureaucratic reshuffle.
6.The apex anti-terror body National Investigation Agency (NIA) will be the nodal authority for probing cases of human trafficking after the government approved a proposal in this regard. The Union Cabinet okayed the draft Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection, and Rehabilitation) Bill, which also proposes a punishment of life imprisonment for repeat offenders. The draft Bill divides various offenses into "trafficking" and "aggravated trafficking".
7.The Chilika lake in Odisha has emerged as the single largest habitat of Irrawaddy dolphins in the world with the spotting of 155 dolphins.The finding is based on the preliminary report of the first ever ‘Annual Monitoring’ of the lake.It was conducted by the CDA to count the number of the dolphins and to study the hydrological impacts of removal of pen culture (locally known as gherries).
8.IndusInd Bank announced its partnership with Ripple (the enterprise blockchain solution for Global Payments) to facilitate payments into and out of India. With this affiliation, RippleNet can now provide instant access in emerging markets such as India, Brazil, and China. In 2017, India saw a total of $65 billion moves into the country and IndusInd Bank which has significant interests in cross-border remittances plans to harness the power of Blockchain technology for facilitating global payments.
9.Scientists from the Botanical Survey of India have identified a new plant species from two protected National Parks in West Bengal.Named Drypetes kalamii, it is a small shrub found to be shorter version of its close relative Drypetes ellisii.The plant is named after former President Abdul Kalam.
10.India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth surged to 7.2% in the December quarter of 2017-18, restoring its status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.The economy grew at 6.7% in Gross Value Added (GVA) terms.The GDP growth rebounded from 6.5% in the previous quarter, reportedly indicating that the economy has moved past disruptions due to demonetisation and GST rollout.
